Structure in Fashion
The artist I began with was Victoria Lytra, an architect from Greece. Lytra uses her knowledge of both architecture and fashion design to portray how architecture and structure can influence each other, through her blog, ‘Form Fashions Project’. Using this concept as inspiration, I found more images of contemporary runway shows that are inspired by structural design concepts and have clear architectural links, both in design and construction.
To take a deeper look into these designs I found construction links that are used throughout, known as fabric manipulation. I experimented with pleating and gathering to see how the techniques could be used to add structure to a garment, I also began to research specific styles of architecture, most notably the Regency period. To further my knowledge, I sketched some Neoclassical interior shapes in fine liner. Then I turned my attention to interior design, specifically 19th century chandeliers and created a biro drawing of a chandelier to further develop my idea. I learned that chandeliers were the main statement in houses and a key factor of wealth and status. To bring this concept back to my main investigation I found many ways the chandelier has influenced fashion, from simplistic designs that use colours and beading, to couture statements, such as Katy Perry's Met Gala dress, designed by Jeremy Scott, that presented a full-sized chandelier shaped dress.
