Regency Fashion
I wanted to look at Regency fashion specifically after researching the architecture and briefly learning about the significance of the period. I researched the dress style and how this varied in different circumstances as well as brief research into Regency stays, to go with my corset design ideas.
I then designed a basic regency style dress and created the pattern to aid the construction. I then decided to spray paint the finished article with paper cut templates from patterns at the Pavilion to add a modern concept of art to a classic historical dress.
I found the awkward Regency Court dresses while doing deeper research. The dramatic shape that had influenced the fashion of the 18th century had remained at court due to the example set by Queen Charlotte and the risen empire waistline had to be used in court dresses for women to remain at the heights of fashion. A brand that usually is seen to replicate this silhouette as a modern concept is Selkie, this design concept helped me take direction towards my final piece.
Using the fabric design that was inspired by Richard Quinn, I printed my own fabric to go with my design ideas: chiffon and satin. I then constructed the dresses. These fabrics were really challenging to work with, so the pieces aren't as refined as I would want them to be.
I took photos of my dresses - I shot some in the dark room using studio lights to show off the dresses and then a second shoot was in the school chapel to represent the dress as being more regal.
