Corsetry

After researching architecture that was specific to the Regency Period, I went back to how structure influences fashion and how I could use this to specifically draw from this niche concept. I researched the history of corsets and how they changed shape over time and how they influenced the structure of garments from the time. It was also interesting to learn how corsets went from undergarments to outerwear in recent design culture, with Westwood being one of the leading designers to change how corsets are used in fashion. I used Westwood's portrait collection corset as inspiration for corset designs as well as the structure of the Brighton Pavilion. I made the corset design and matching underwear with a cage shaped using inspiration from historical silhouette as well as the shape of the Pavilion, replicating the shape of the roof in a sculptural structure.

I thought of design concepts to refine this idea further and created a dress that envisioned structure in fashion in a different way, representing structure through fabric design. I printed my screen print onto fabric as a continuous pattern that could then be used into my design. My next idea was to put another cage on top, but this hasn't been created yet.
