Scholarship

When it was time to apply for the 16+ scholarship at school, there was a lot of competition, so I didn't want to rely just on my GCSE coursework. I also wanted the opportunity to execute a design concept that I couldn’t fit into my personal investigation project.

Throughout the pandemic, my camera came out with me on all my walks; I found lots of graffiti that portrayed an urban art landscape which I could use as further inspiration.

I took inspiration from Daniel Fletcher’s collection from the finale of Netflix Next in Fashion. This collection represented Fletcher's staple design style that is true to his British roots, represented through the inspiration of the 1920s socialites, the Bright Young Things, and Cecil Beaton's portraits depicting them. The showstopper dress that I  took initial inspiration from represented a classic ballgown shape that is seen to have the skirt ripped off and then sewn back on at a party, this silhouette was what pushed my design further. I wanted to see what modern day inspiration I could add to a historical shape.

I made my dress design and then spray painted it, using my graffiti photos as inspiration for this. I then photographed my model next to the same urban landscape that was my initial inspiration.

I also experimented with double exposure effect using Photoshop onto images I had taken of myself and models to further develop the concept.
